Can I keep my existing domain when I get a new website?

Lucas Brasso de Morais · · 3 min read

Usually, you can keep an existing domain if you control its registration and DNS settings. Building a new website does not automatically require buying another address or transferring the domain. Before launch, we review the domain, existing email, current pages and hosting requirements. Registration, renewals and ongoing hosting are separate from the development price.

One real domain, several connected pages

On this website, the service catalogue, contact page and French service offer all use lucasbrasso.dev. The pages have their own paths; changing pages and adding a language does not mean each one needs a separate domain. Open these live examples to see the address stay on the same domain.

These are public routes of the developer’s own site, not a client migration case study. They show the URL structure; they do not prove that an existing client’s domain or email has been migrated.

Do I have to transfer my domain to the developer?

A domain transfer and a website launch are different operations. The registrar manages the domain registration; DNS connects the name to services such as hosting and email. Depending on the setup, an existing domain can connect to new hosting while staying with its registrar. We review the actual provider and access situation before deciding how to launch.

Keep a record of who controls the registrar account, who receives renewal notices and when the domain expires. The written proposal should identify which accounts you manage and what launch support Lucas provides. Do not put passwords or access tokens into the public project brief; provider access can be arranged separately when it is needed.

What happens to my business email?

Business email may use the same domain while being hosted by a different provider from the website. A website change therefore needs an inventory of the existing setup. Domain-level changes can affect more than the pages visitors see, so the launch plan should identify the email provider and records before making changes.

Tell Lucas if the address already receives business email or supports another application. Review the proposed website changes alongside the existing records, and include email checks in the launch process. This is a planning requirement, not a promise of zero downtime or automatic migration of inboxes. Moving email accounts or mail archives is separate scope.

Can I keep my current pages and Google links?

List the existing pages that people use before agreeing a new structure. Where useful, keep their URLs and relevant content. If URLs must change, plan the appropriate old-to-new mapping and redirects. A new design is not a reason to discard a page that still answers a customer question.

The five-page development package does not include an undefined migration of a large existing site. An archive, shop, multilingual library or application needs review. Search visibility can fluctuate after a move, and neither keeping a domain nor adding redirects guarantees that rankings will remain unchanged.

What should I send before a domain review?

Start with the public website address, the registrar or hosting provider if you know it, whether you use business email, and the pages or tools you need to preserve. If you do not know the provider, say so. That is enough to begin the scope conversation without sharing credentials in a form.

Lucas’s €599 website package and €399 landing page offer include agreed domain connection and launch support. They do not include free domain registration, perpetual hosting, paid tools or ongoing maintenance. Existing-site migration, additional services, access responsibilities and timing are confirmed in the proposal before work.
